Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Chogoria
Upon your arrival in Nairobi our safari guide will transfer you by road to Chogoria where your mountain hiking safari will commence in the company of the guide and porters. Penetrate the forest at 1600m. Depending on time, weather conditions or client preferences, you may have the option to driving to a clearing at 2,400m – possibly hiking some of the way. Most hikers opt to camp here, though some do choose the additional 7 km to the Park Gate at 2,950m. Enjoy an evening meal served around a camp fire. Retire to the tents and to the bizarre sounds of the Mt Kenya rain forest.
Day 2: A trip to Mugi and Lake Ellis
After an early morning breakfast, hike through the remaining part of the forest via the bamboo zone to the National Park Gate. Settle down for some snacks as you grace up for the remainder of the days walk to a secluded campsite at Lake Ellis. Follow the main tourist track for about an hour, then take a right turn and head up towards Mugi Hill and Lake Ellis 3200m where you will have a rest for your lunch. Later after relaxation proceed to a private campsite next to a small stream. The walk through the tussock grass, heather and protease is quite beautiful.
Day 3: A hike to Mintos Hut Area
After a morning breakfast, climb over a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours and eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route (4,100m). The panoramic view of George’s Valley is breathtaking as you hike towards Itinguni and the Northern Moorlands. Enjoy your lunch at a small stream crossing, before continuing for an hour to the Mintos Hut area (4200m) for your dinner and overnight. After relaxation at the camp, undertake a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” which is well worth the effort. This is a 500ft vertical cliff that derives its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they stand as if they are praying. It is advisable to take an early night rest in preparation of the next day’s summit climb.
Day 4: Accessing Pt Lenana
Take a cup of tea at 3am local time and begin an early climb on your way to Pt Lenana, via Simba Col. before sun rise. Access the top – optimistically before the clouds submerge the summit and interrupt photography – a demonstration of your victorious mountain climbing! Descend from the peak via the same route as far as Simba Col. Turn left and head on down a steep scree slope to Shiptons Camp, arriving late morning. You take a rest for a couple of hours, before the final 2 hours walk heading down the mountain along the Sirimon route to the Liki North area (3990m) for the night.
Day 5: Park Gate to Nairobi
After breakfast, leave Park gate early in the morning back to Nairobi.
